Cake Smash Tips & Instructions

Aug 21st, 2018

A child turning one is such a huge milestone that photographers dedicate a special shoot for them. The cake smash sessions are extremely popular around the globe, and let’s face it, they are the cutest sessions ever! There are a few things that you need to know about preparing your little one for the session, and also what to expect during the session.

First, its a wise idea to give your child a taste of cake and/or icing prior to the session. It is such a new taste for them and their reaction may not be what you expect. Not only that, but if they happen to be allergic to something in the cake, its best to find out sooner than later! The last thing we want is to cut a session short because of an allergic reaction. While it is rare, it still could potentially happen! If your child has a known allergy, please let us know so that we can accommodate you!

We encourage you to bring two outfits. One outfit should be formal, for some pre-cake photos. The second outfit is going to be the smash outfit. We would not recommend bringing an outfit that is overly expensive or that you cherish. Sometimes the cake will stain clothing, depending on the color. Just be aware of that!

We will begin your session with the formal outfit. This part of the session lasts about 10 minutes or so and will include a slightly different setup. All children are different, so don’t be upset if your child isn’t reacting the way you’d hoped! We still get amazing photos of your children, even on their bad days.

You will have about 5-10 minutes to change your child into their cake smash clothes while we change up the set. This is where the fun begins! We encourage one parent to assist during this part to keep your baby on the set. They do a great job of crawling off set with cake filled hands. This portion of the session usually lasts 15-20 minutes.

Lastly, our newly added SPLASH part of the session! We know that you travel to our studio for the cake smash session for your child to get all dirty. But, what better way to clean them off than with a bathtub session! Most parents strip their babies down and put them in the tub. If you are not comfortable doing that, do not worry! A swimmie diaper is just fine. We can do a bubble bath set or a fruit milk bath set! The choice is absolutely yours.

We hope that you enjoy your cake smash & splash session with us here at Ashlyn Socinski Photography in Sevierville, Tennessee. Final galleries are delivered within 2 weeks of your session.
